Scenario Planning
My interest in this grew out of reading Stewart Brand's The Media Lab1a long time ago. The ease with which one can follow little chains of thought from meme carrier to meme carrier (aka people) via the Web is still something I find amazing. It can also be totally time wasting!Scenario planning is an approach that makes the human habit of telling ourselves stories about the future a little more formal and, at times, rigorous.
Scenario planning done well shifts or disrupts mindsets. There are now plenty of resources online that describe the process and outcomes for some of the famous instances of scenario planning that have taken place.
I still like Peter Schwarz's book, The Art of the Long View as a good place to start.
I've done a fair bit of scenario planning with different groups and am always amazed at hour the group dynamics shift as we move through the different phases of the planning process.
